Update and 100 Words - Lessons Learnt

Update

Today (Sunday) my other half and I will be guests on a local radio station talking about the 5 year anniversary of the Tribute Nights that have been organised at the Rising Sun Arts Centre in Reading. It will be on between 6PM to 8PM BST. The next one is on Friday 5th August and will be One Hit Wonders. If you see this in time, the link is here: http://www.reading4u.co.uk/  and a link to what was played on the show is here: Strawberry Sundae Blog. It takes a bit of time to organise them, let alone special anniversary ones, so I do apologise for not being around blogland very much. Things should improve in a couple of weeks time. But it is all for a good cause. All the money we raise goes straight to the venue where we hold the events which is run by volunteers.

Recently I keep bumping into people out of the blue, out of context and many years after I last saw them. It has been the sort of whirlwind coincidental occurrence that I would have thought incredibly contrived if I had read about it in a book or seen it in a film. As it has been happening in such a quick succession I feel as if I've been catapulted back into my past. It's proved a disconcerting but not unpleasant feeling. I would probably not have lost touch with them if social media sites existed 15 years ago. Then again I had a lot of growing up to do back then. It was easier to let people slip out of my life then open up to them. I was afraid they would not want to know the real me with all my flaws. Now the people who do want to know stick around and those that don't go away. It's a much simpler life. However, if things had been different I also wouldn't have experienced the jolt of recognition, the rush of memories, the moment in time when you realise how pleased you are to have bumped into them and how much you are looking forward to filling in the pieces of the puzzle you have missed out on.

I had the great pleasure to meet author Nicola May at a book signing in Reading this weekend. The premise of the book is excellent, she was very engaging to talk to and she is also raising money for charity. You can learn more about what her work here: http://www.nicolamay.com/.

100 Words - Lessons Learnt

I was never a model student.  I loved to learn but was never a slave to knowledge.  There was always something else I wanted to do.

At University in my second year I picked all my classes so that they fell on a Thursday.  One day from 9 till 6 and I was free to follow other pursuits.

My two favourite courses related to American History and Russian History.  The former because of an outstandingly gifted and inspirational tutor.  The latter because the tutor circulated authentic Russian vodka during discussion groups.

Unsurprisingly Russian classes were always well attended and stimulating.

  3. Great news on the radio show, I hope it all goes well.

I'm with you on the whole letting people slip out of your life. I think I'm at that point in time where I've recognised how much growing up I've done and yet how much needs still to be done. I hope the reunions have all been positive.

Loved the 100 word post. Amazing how much you can share in so few words.

  5. Ha ha! A lecturer who gave out vodka- sounds fantastic. Ours didn't do that but there was one who seemed very inclined to offer extensions on assignments if you bought him a pint of cider as you asked him!

  6. Bit late for me, no longer teaching, should have used the vodka idea!

  7. How funny - vodka in class. I'm a big fan of Russian literature, but know little about it's history.

I don't always like running into people from the past. Those I want to keep in touch with I do, and the rest I like to keep in distant memory.

Of course this is not a hard and fast rule.

  8. Hope that all went well, congrats on the radio show.
Meeting people who I have not seen for years is wonderful if only i could remember their names :-)
Now if only I had known about vodka and Russian History...... Take care Diane xx

  9. It was an interesting time back then. I was trying to hold down a couple of jobs and get involved with societies so one day for lectures seemed like a good idea at the time.

As for the radio show it was a lot of fun to do. I hope we have a good turn out at the Tribute Night.

In terms of the out of the blue reunions so far they have all been most welcome. However there are some people I would not want to be in touch with. A friend was saying the other day that they think people often do not change very much from the way they treated you in the past. There are a couple of cases in particular I do not want to take a chance on finding out.

  10. Hiya how fun that you were both on the radio! I can just picture you (or should I say hear you). Did Froggy go along and sit in a front row seat :) Russian History, Literature and Vodka. What a great idea. I love all three and would have signed up in a jiffy!

  11. Hi Dolly, it was good fun, I've added the playlist link to the above post. Froggy stayed at home this time. I think you and I would very much have enjoyed taking Russian History lessons together!

  14. I'm glad that so many interesting things happen in your life. Including meeting with old acquaintances. It's especially pleasant when such meetings are filled with positivity. If you study Russian history and wash the information down with vodka, the lessons will be very popular.

Thanks for choosing to leave me a comment and let me know how you feel about my post. It is always very exciting to get a comment. Unless it is spam. Spam is pretty insulting to a vegetarian (unless it is part of a Monty Python sketch) so please desist. Cheers.
